For many, abbreviations are more than a saving of characters and time. They are a form of expression, a way of life, especially when texting among young people. Whether young or old, it doesn't hurt to keep up with the times and learn.
You don't have to actively use abbreviations, but only those who know them can understand them. You are spared inquiries and the other person may be pleasantly surprised if the message is ended with a GTG or answered with an AMA. But maybe just a little FOMO plays a role.
