The world is full of small and big wonders. To discover them, you don't even have to travel far, but simply go outside your own door with your eyes open.
However, since it is human nature to make lists and sort things, even in ancient times people tried to summarize the wonders of this world in an overview.
About what is a wonder of the world and what is not, however, there was already a dispute in antiquity. The problem, however, was not that one did not want to grant a building the status of a wonder of the world. There were simply too many outstanding constructions that would have deserved this status.
Thus, attempts were made again and again to place own buildings on one of the desired places on the list of wonders of the world.
The only thing people agreed on was the number. At that time, the number seven already had a mythical and cultural meaning for the Greeks.
Today's list of the ancient wonders of the world is based on the historians Herodotus (487 - 424 BC) and Antipater (end of the 2nd century BC). Both had named and described the wonders of the world in their writings.
A remarkable aspect is that the Greeks already recognized that outstanding achievements had also been made outside of their architecture. Thus also buildings from other cultures ended up on the list.
In the following Dailys you will therefore learn something about:
- the Pyramids of Giza,
- the Hanging Gardens of Babylon,
- the Colossus of Rhodes,
- the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus,
- the Statue of Zeus at Olympia,
- the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus and
- the Lighthouse of Alexandria.
Spoiler Alert:
Unfortunately, there are not many pictures awaiting you with these seven wonders - unlike the others. This is of course due to the fact that most of the ancient wonders of the world have long since ceased to exist.
We hope that your imagination provides you with your own enriching images in your head and wish you a lot of fun with the inspirations.
